In light of events in our nation on January 6, 2021, I am calling on our Buckner family to join me in praying for unity among all Americans. Our national motto, "E Pluribus Unum," "Out of many, one," reminds us that regardless of our differences, what unites us as one nation, one people, is stronger than our differences. It is this call for unity that I am asking us to pray for today.
The violence that stalked the hallways of the Capitol must be condemned and those who violated the sanctity of our constitution and the moral fiber of our democracy must be held accountable for their acts. Those who perpetrated these acts do not represent our nation and instead, drive a wedge of division between us.
I ask our Buckner family to reflect on the words of scripture, which call on us to, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind, let each of you regard one another as more important than yourself.” [Philippians 2:3]
Let us pray for unity that is built on humility, recognizing that the person next to us is more important than ourselves. And let us follow the example of Jesus, who “emptied himself, taking the form of a bond-servant,” sacrificing himself for others.
